CHARACTER
NAME: Eagle
CANON: Kemono Kingdom ~Zoo~
CANON POINT: Post-canon, right after Lion’s Coming-of-Age party
AGE: No actual age given in canon but with the mental and physical maturity of 20-ish. Steller’s Sea Eagles gain their adult plumage at 10 weeks, and reach sexual maturity at around 5 years.

BACKGROUND:
Kemono Kingdom ~Zoo~ is the story of the inhabitants of a country named “the Upper Yard” that is definitely modeled after a zoo, with various regions like a jungle, a tundra and a temperate forest all within walking distance of each other, each with vastly different weather. The inhabitants range from human-like, bipedal animals like Eagle, to actual animals and some that are halfway between. This is considered as completely normal and there is, unfortunately, no discourse into the science behind all this so it’s possibly some sort of genetic mutation.

Before becoming a guardian of the kingdom under King Panda, Eagle originally lived in the East side of Upper Yard. An accident in his childhood caused him to injure his wings and become unable to fly. As a bird of prey, being unable to fly led him to be bullied quite a lot by his peers, eventually leading to him leaving the East entirely. He doesn't much like to talk about that period in his life. Not much is mentioned canon-wise about his family.

After leaving the West, Eagle served King Panda as a guardian up till the king's death. The King (and the fact that he was a panda and everyone loves pandas) had been what kept the peace, and even though his successor Lesser Panda was cute, he didn't quite have the same support as the previous king. Eagle, however, had wholeheartedly believed in the king's peaceful approach to ruling, and because of that he didn't approve of the actions of the various usurpers to the throne when Lesser Panda takes over. This leads to him clashing again and again with the most likely (self-proclaimed) contender for the throne of Upper Yard: Lion. They fight it out more than once, over the kidnapping of Lesser Panda's son, and over Lion's followers not allowing free use of the bridge. When it is announced that actually King Panda had left behind a son (aptly named Prince Panda), Lion attacks and reveals that Snowy Owl (who was known as the Sage, as well as Eagle's one-sided love interest) had been working for him in order to make Lion the king. Eagle is soundly beaten and is only saved when the King's advisor: Kangaroo arrives and wins Lion's followers to his side. When everyone turns against Lion with the reason that he wasn't really from Upper Yard anyway, that strikes a chord with Eagle, who had once also had no place to belong. Eagle offers Lion a place to stay in Upper Yard. Eventually Lion concedes to becoming a prisoner of the Upper Yard, assigned to do community service with Eagle as his supervisor.

Eagle plans the tasks for Lion's community service as a way for Lion to become accepted by the rest of Upper Yard, choosing to make him massage Elephant's trunk, babysit lemurs, or plan a barbecue party with Polar Bear. This plan works, and the animals of Upper Yard begin to see Lion as a part of their circle, Eagle and Lion also developing a rapport and trust between them. Not long after though, King Lion of Tama invades on the basis that Eagle and the rest of Upper Yard had been bullying Lion, cutting his mane and wounding his pride as a lion. As punishment, King Lion mangles Eagle's wings. Lion ends up winning against King Lion (partly in retaliation against his mangling of Eagle's wings), and is officially named Guardian of Upper Yard along with Eagle.

PERSONALITY:
If you were to describe Eagle in one word, it would probably be "loyal". And this loyalty of his to the Upper Yard, to the king, to everyone he loves, defines his very being and his actions.

In his childhood he often felt that he had no place. He was a bird of prey, and yet he couldn't fly. Everyone else soared while he walked. He knew that he wouldn't be missed (and this thinking of his was only reinforced time and time again). So he left, and in the West he met the Panda King who took care of everyone and kept the peace, he met Elephant that didn't care if he could fly or not and lifted the child Eagle up as high as he wanted to go on his trunk. He found animals that counted on him even if he didn't have the abilities he should have as a true bird of prey. He found a home for himself, and no one ever made him feel that because he was grounded that it made him any less of an eagle (or made him a penguin which was what some animals in the East said).

Because they gave him a place and a purpose, in return he gave them everything he had. His love, his respect, he is even willing, at a single word, to lay down his life and his happiness for them if that's what it takes. He doesn't expect anything from them, and honestly is so happy whenever he hears that there is something that he can do, that there is something he can give them for all they have done for him that he comes off as being kind of masochistic. That doesn't bother him, of course. As long as they are willing to accept him, he loves them unconditionally in return. He also takes their enemies as his enemies (seen by his bad attitude towards Lion whom he had, for the longest time, seen as a threat to the peace of Upper Yard).

However, because he is so willing to throw himself in harm's way for other's sakes without much thought and he is too stubborn to run away, he often gets stuck in situations that are too much for him to handle. For instance, in pretty much every encounter Eagle has with Lion before he is defeated. Even if every encounter ended up with Eagle being seriously injured, that didn't stop him from jumping in time and time again to defend the Upper Yard that King Panda ruled over, even after the king's death.

Eagle is good at recognizing the merits and abilities of others, and he doesn't hesitate to point them out as was the case with Lion and his talent at massage. He knows what it's like to be told that you're useless, and he doesn't want others, especially those that are important to him to have that same feeling.

It is not so easy for him to name good things about himself though. This stems from the fact that Eagle believes, despite all the animals who care about him, that fundamentally there is something lacking in him and no one will choose to stay with him if they had the choice. Even if he's told that they want him by their side he has trouble believing it, seen by when he misunderstands the relationship between Lion and Snowy Owl after their arrest. Despite the fact that he eventually comes to love both Snowy Owl and Lion, he's willing to put his own feelings on hold and tell them to choose each other if it means that they'll be happy. He continues to do this, even when Snowy Owl tells him outright that she has zero interest in Lion and only (tormenting) Eagle makes her happy. Lion himself comes out to find Eagle who has run away from Lion's sickbed despite not having recovered fully and being surrounded by other friends. When he is outright praised for something he's done, or good things happen to him, he tends to get very flustered and tongue-tied.

After meeting Lion, he becomes more willing to admit that just because someone may have cared for him, that doesn't automatically mean that they're infallible (as was the case with Snowy Owl who reveals that she was working with Lion to depose Lesser King Panda the entire time). When he's faced with situations like these though, because he isn't willing to break ties with those that have cared for him, he still often chooses to ignore the problem. Usually via hiding in any available dark, warm place (bonus points if it was also cramped) because it reminds him of being in an egg and being safe from everything around him.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
Eagle is a flightless bird of prey but also a guardian so over the years he’s developed a fighting style that allows him to utilize gravity even without the ability to fly. Often this involves him jumping down from high places. Unfortunately he’s not very strong nor very skilled. What he is skilled in though is knowledge about animals and their habits, able to remember their preferred habitats, special skills, quirks, and preferred foods. Despite being absolutely okay with eating an entire fish raw, he’s also good at cleaning, preparing, and cooking fish when the need arises. Gifted with a good voice, he only ever sings when he’s drunk and the only song he currently knows is the song he’s supposed to sing as part of a courtship ritual.

As an eagle he also has very good vision, but this ability of his decreases as the amount of light decreases, rendering him almost blind at night.

INVENTORY:
Sword
Lion’s Vest complete with blood stain

MOONBLESSING: Cordis
